How can I prevent rabbits from entering my garden / eating my plants?Answer
Rabbits are notoriously difficult to deter but there are a number of welfare-friendly measures which can be employed to prevent or minimise damage caused by rabbits.
Preventing rabbits from entering your property should be your first concern. This can be achieved by installing and maintaining a physical barrier, i.e. Fence or wall. Fencing Using 18 gauge wire mesh erect a fence 4 to 4.5ft (120-140cm) high and one foot (30cm) below ground level around gardens or flower beds; the lower one foot should be angled outwards to deter rabbits from burrowing underneath. The maximum mesh size should be one inch (2.5cm) to prevent young rabbits squeezing through. For individual plants; netting 3ft(90cm) high can be installed, without the need to bury part underground. Wire netting or spiral tree guards can be put around the base of young trees to prevent bark feeding. |
