What to do if you have lost an animal

Lost dog:

Before you do anything else, report your loss to the local authority dog warden. If you believe your dog has been stolen, report it to the police and ask for a crime reference number. Further advice on lost or stolen dogs from Dog Theft Action; enter the site and click on "Lost or stolen?"

Register your lost animal with us (free) by emailing actiononmissingcats@gmail.com. With your permission we will put your lost animal on the national online lost and found register www.nationalpetregister.org. This is a secure site since all contact will be mediated through us. It will also automatically go to RSPCA National's lost and found register.

We also strongly suggest that:

  1. You look through the found animals already listed on www.nationalpetregister.org to see if your animal has been registered as found
  2. You also look through other online lost and found pet registers to see if your animal has been registered as found
  3. You register your animal as lost on other online lost and found registers, local animal shelters and national and regional lost and found lists which are not online.

What to do if you have found an animal

Advice on what to do:

Any animal found dead should be reported to the local authority environment department. But please report it to us too - most owners would prefer to know what has happened to their pet.

Found dog:

First, you should check to see if the dog is wearing any form of identification that will enable you to return him directly to his owner. Otherwise you should contact your local authority to arrange for the dog warden to collect the dog. How to contact a dog warden.


Found cat:

First, if the cat is approachable, download our paper collar (instructions included) and place it on the cat. If in 24 hours the owner has not contacted you, or if the cat is not approachable, here is what else you can do.


Register your found animal with us (free) by emailing us at actiononmissingcats@gmail.com. We will put your found animal on the national online lost and found register www.lostyourpet.net. This is totally secure since all contact will be mediated through us. It will also automatically go to RSPCA National's lost and found register.

If you are an animal lover you know or can imagine how heartbreaking it is to lose a beloved pet. With this in mind, we hope that you will consider:

  1. Looking through the lost animals already listed on www.nationalpetregister.org to see if the animal you have found has been registered as lost
  2. Looking through other online lost and found pet registers to see if the animal you have found has been registered as lost
  3. Registering the animal you have found on other online lost and found registers, local animal shelters and national and regional lost and found lists which are not online.
